Forum thread: Change HotSync iD?

Hi Marcus,
We're setting up a trial with more teachers at our school using STEARsoft, after my (successful) usage last year.
I've added a new user account but mistakenly added an arbitrary HotSync ID while adding the teacher. When sync failed (duh!) I added a free trial account with the correct info then attempted to edit the HotSync number of the full account. '12345' is obviously not going to work, but your help on the page just says I can't change this. Am I stuck with a non-working account (my own fault) or is this something you can fix from your end?

This could be contentious in the future, as we have purchased a set of itouch hand-helds for staff use, but many staff are updating to iphones. I can envisage a number of staff starting on the iTouch, buying a phone (or iPad) and wanting to then use that. If I can't edit the HotSync ID, we're a bit stuck!

Dear Tim,

This reflects the need for a tutorial.  Once you've read this, you'll hopefully find it all much easier as well as reassuring.

The Hotsync ID is there from where things started several years back before iPhones and iPod touches and relates to Palm handhelds.  It is still used to help identify an iPod/iPhone, but in this case it is much more straight-forward.

For first time use:
1)  Create a teacher account but do not specify a Hotsync ID.
2)  Sync your iPod.

This will automatically fill in the 'Hotsync ID' in the teacher account.

To change to a different iPod/iPhone or to associate an iPod with a different teacher account:
1)  Go to the administrator login and 'Edit' the relevant teacher account.
2)  Delete the current Hotsync ID so that there isn't even a space.  Save your changes.
3)  Sync the new iPod (or with the new account).

So you can change iPod/iPhone device as often as you like for an account.

NOTE: You do not have to activate any kind of license under the Palm column headings bit - that is only needed for Palm devices (not Apple devices).  This process is used to sync a validated license key to Palm devices (as they didn't benefit from the iTunes like App store for licensing).

With regard how licensing works, in the administrator screen, use the right-hand column to tick the teacher accounts you want to designate as licensed (up to your limit).  Make sure your non-licensed accounts don't collectively get up to the trial limit and all should be fine.

I hope this helps simplify things.

Yours,

Marcus.

PS  It's half term this coming week and we have a houseful about to arrive.  Chances are I won't be on the forum for a few days so may be less responsive.

Thanks Marcus, I think I've got it now!

As a former UK lad, I remember half-term with affection! Here, we're just coming up to the fourth week of the first term - torrential rain followed by high 30C weather!

Enjoy the break, and thank you.

Cheers, Tim Tuck
