Forum thread: Shuffle students into random groups

Component: (stearsoft.co.uk/STEARsoft web interface/Palm-device)
Suggestion:

Hi Marcus, I'd love to be able to use the STEARsoft data to randomly allocate students into groups for lessons.

I already have a couple of (okay) apps on my iPhone, but it means duplicating data. I envisage a class screen and the ability to randomise the class order or randomly put the class into groups of (say) 2/3/4/5 etc.

Cheers, Tim

PS I understand this is not a core function of an attendance program, but I did notice that our EdSas admin program at school, that records just daily attendance, has a function for selecting a random set of students for things such as questionnaires, workshop trials, statistics etc.

Dear Tim,

Yes, I'm aware this is a feature on a few other products.  I will add it to the list, but there are currently some higher priorities, so it might be a while before this sort of thing creeps in.

Although you've probably already done something similar, I'll mention that on the 'Class details' screen you can click Table of 'full pupil data' near the top right of the screen.  At the bottom of this screen is all the student data in a form ready to copy and paste.  In particular, copying and pasting from here in to Excel will very quickly give you your class lists in Excel.  We use this to start mark sheets, and once in Excel it is a breeze to form groups, random or otherwise and then to print/export them.  Not quite hand-held, but maybe that exporting process is useful to know about.

Yours,

Marcus.
