Forum thread: iPad

Hello,

I have a simple suggestion that would be of great help! Would it be possible to make a iPad compatible app!

Thank you.

Dear Chris,

Thank you for this suggestion. Development has actually already started for this, so it's good to have further indication this will be appreciated.

In the mean time, I trust you are aware that the iPhone app works fine on an iPad, particularly if you use the 2x button which then allows you to see quite a lot of attendance at once.

Yours,

Marcus

Just adding to this, when would we see this in the App Store?

Not sure yet. I've hit a few tricky issues which may take a while to resolve. It's also quite an involved and extensive update, so the testing process may throw up problems that add significant delay. So not that soon. We'll release it when ready rather than trying to hit a specific time-scale. It will be months rather than weeks, but I sincerely hope it will be within a year.

Thank you for that information and the speedy reply!

I look forward to the release.

It's done! The tricky issues were quicker to resolve than feared and things then went very smoothly.

The update in the App store released yesterday is a universal App. This release also supports landscape orientation in all screens.

Currently, only the full version is universal; the Lite version is still an iPhone App.

Enjoy!

It's great and shows up great on the retina display. Thank you for this much needed update! It is very much appreciated!

Hello. I upgraded from lite to pro on my  iPad. I appreciate the functionality, but the app is crashing regularly. Have others reported this? Will there be an update? I would prefer NOT to leave a complaint in the app review section.
Thanks- Bob

Dear Bob,

Many thanks for reporting this. There haven't been any other reports, so I'm keen to hear more so we can fix the problem.

Have you noticed from which screen it crashes? Are you able to narrow it down to 'doing' anything in particular? The more details you can give, the more likely we'll be able to recreate the problem here and then fix it.

Thank you again for reporting this here.

Yours,

Marcus

Hello Marcus-

Thanks for the prompt reply!

I get significant crashes when in the "add incident" screen, after creating or attempting to save a new type of incident. A function request is prompted here as well: I set up several hypothetical incident reports to familiarize myself with the function, and am now unable to delete those incidents. It would be helpful to be able to do so.

Also, the app crashed quite a few times when I was going back and forth between STEARsoft and my plain text note app (Notesy), copying student lists from Notesy and pasting them into STEARsoft. I was eventually able to get all of my classes set up, but the crashes added a good bit of time (and frustration!) to the process.

Thanks so much!
Bob

Dear Bob,

Many thanks for this further detail. As yet I've not been able to reproduce the problem here, but I shall keep trying.

Regarding deleting incidents:
 - to delete an incident, tap the incident to show its details, there should then be a 'bin' (delete) icon on the bottom toolbar to delete this incident.
- to delete an incident 'type', get to the screen that lists the types with the option at the top to add a new type. On this screen swipe horizontally on the type you wish to delete; a delete button should appear to confirm the delete. (this is a hidden iOS feature you will find in other Apps and in other places in STEARsoft)

Though I suspect all the following have been checked by you or aren't relevant, please forgive me for checking these to be sure:
1) do you have the most recent version (3.1.1)
2) whIch particular iPad do you have? Is it an iPad3 or a 'mini' or earlier?
3) does the crash only happen when switching between Apps? Because this App has been around a while, it is based on 2nd generation devices which didn't multi-task, so restarted every time you switch between Apps; this is still what STEARsoft does. This may be misunderstood as a crash.

If 3) is the indication to what is happening, we can try and get an update out to use the multi-tasking features now available (being careful of course not to upset those using older devices that don't support this).

In any case, by way of a token gesture of thanks for your communication so far and to acknowledge the frustration you have clearly had, I have credited your account that you access this forum on with a single user license for the windows software. This may be useless if you don't have a windows PC, but if you do have access, at home or at school, you may find this useful; particularly if you want to import more data in the future.

Thank you for your patience. I hope you're able to shed some further light using the above questions or by reporting any other details you have noticed.

Marcus,

Thanks once again for the superb customer care.

I do have version 3.1.1, and I'm using an iPad 3. Your explanation of the crash misunderstanding when switching app makes sense to me, so I'll wait for the multitasking update.

Thanks for pointing out the delete function for incidents.

I am still getting crashes in the incident report function; just now, I went to the "add incident" screen, selected "type", "add new type", started typing something in, changed my mind and pressed "cancel", and this causes a crash every time.  Also, when I create a new incident type and save it, it crashes when I go back to class. The new incident type will have saved, but not without a crash. In all of the above cases, I did not assign a numeric value to the "weight, threshold and expires" screens. When I put values in those fields it did not crash. I only need the incident type and not the associated values, but apparently those are required...???

Thank you for offering the WIndows license! I use a Mac at home and a Windows machine at the school office, so it will be put to good use.

I look forward to updates, etc.

Peace-
Bob

Bob,

Many thanks for all of this. I've finally got there. A bit embarrassing... It's an issue that only shows itself in iOS6. Now I've got a device running iOS6 I can see it crashing almost every time.

I should now be able to get to the bottom of this and release an update to fix the problem fairly quickly, so thank you very much for bringing this to my attention.

Yours,

Marcus

Bob,

The update released late yesterday in the app store fixes the crash in the incident area. Moving to a multitasking app will take a little longer as I want to be careful not to break things for existing customers with older devices.

Thank you again for bringing these issues to my attention.

Best wishes,

Marcus

Thanks so much Marcus. I noticed the change right away with the update. I will look forward to the multitasking when you can get to it. My next mission is to understand the setup and sync of the Windows platform. I am a bit daunted after my first unsuccessful try, but I notice that there are tutorials and a forum thread; I have hope!

I'm finding the app to be quite useful on a daily basis- thanks again!

Marcus-

I forgot to mention a wish list item, a "nice-to-have but not a deal breaker: the ability to change user name and password once logged in.

Dear Bob,

Thank you for this further feedback and thoughtful suggestion regarding login details. I hope the tutorials will make everything clear, but please post here if you're getting stuck.

Regarding username and password whilst I agree it's a bit of a pain, there are a few reasons why I'm probably going to stick. As well as one or two technical reasons related to activation codes, it would open up data protection issues which at present I'd be uncomfortable with. However once you have a successful PC install, there is a handy button in the administrator screen that logs you straight in, entering login details automatically for you.

Yours,

Marcus

Hello again Marcus. I noticed that my iPad wants me to update STEARsoft Lite. I assume that I should NOT install this update because I've already upgraded to Pro...??? I'd like to clear the Lite version from the update list.

Thanks so much. I am now reminded to review the Pro version of the app (already reviewed the Lite version).

Thank you Bob,

The Lite and Pro versions are completely separate apps, so they appear separately in the app store, on your phone (and for review and update purposes). They also have separate data.

Updating the Lite version won't backgrade or otherwise affect your Pro install. However, to avoid confusion and clutter you can remove the Lite app from your iPad though: Find the Lite icon and touch and hold the icon until all your icons start wobbling. As well as now being able to rearrange your icons, you can delete them by touching the small cross. Exit wobble mode by pressing the iPad physical home button.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

Yours,

Marcus

Thanks again Marcus. I'm embarrassed to say that I had "hidden" the lite version in a folder on my last page of apps, then was puzzled that I couldn't find it. At that point, I assumed that when I had upgraded, it simply combined with the lite app. I am familiar with the process of removing apps, and I did delete the lite version from my iPad and from iTunes.

In peace-
Bob

Hi Bob,

Just to let you know in case you hadn't already spotted, the update last week (for iPad and iPhone) now includes multi-tasking, so you should be able to switch back and forth between apps to set up your classes.

Yours,

Marcus
