Forum thread: Cant sync from Ipad
Helen Jay 31 January 2011 08:10 |
Hi I've never been able to sync from my ipad to my laptop (or vice versa). I'm sure I've followed everything in the tutorials...have tried to anyway. Have windows 7. Laptop is on wifi (connection working).
Ipad has all the data I need, laptop has a basic start (couple of classes added)
I have the sync set up. Username, password. Tried various. Server details Server 1 http://my computer namexx:13031. Have also tried using my IP address (ipaddress of ipad)
Getting the following message each time.
Synchronisation failed Timed out trying to connect (966) Please try again, checking your WiFi connection and the server network address
-- The only thing that I can think of is that sometimes I get a window security message "the server xxxx at local-stearsoft requires a username and password" I've googled to find a solution to the security issue, but it's getting highly complicated!
Any suggestions? |

It did occur to me that perhaps I needed to download the software on the 'wired' computer, rather than a laptop on the wireless network? |

Dear Helen,
I'm sorry to hear this. It sounds frustrating. Hopefully we'll get you working soon.
Did you use the you-tube tutorial, 'Synchronising data from a PC' found here: http://www.stearsoft.co.uk/tutorials/iphone/index.html Trying to access stearsoft using safari (on your iPad) is a good first step, as it removes some of the extra configuration questions surrounding the App. You have to type in the address of your laptop as shown in the tutorial.
If you use an ip address instead of your computer name, it should be the 'local' ip address of your LAPTOP (excuse the capitals). To check this, open a command prompt on your laptop and type 'ipconfig'. This gives you the IP address you want.
If that works then you're only small steps to getting synchronisation working. If it doesn't work, it would be good to know at what point you can't progress, compared to the steps the tutorial indicates you should be able to do. If you can't get anything to appear it might be that you have a firewall blocking network access.
If you can try the above and let me know where you get to, I can then try and help more specifically.
Yours,
Marcus. |

Thankyou for getting back to me. I really like the app, but want to sync for a backup.
I did follow the youtube instructions, and believe I have done it correctly...but I do have a problem with the part approx 15 seconds into the youtube.
I use Safari to check my connection, and it wont load. Get "Cannot open Page. Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding"
I have an additional problem now, which didn't happen at the very beginning. I have the program installed and have added a class (all data on ipad at present). When I log into the admin on my laptop, I get "Authentication required. The server xxxxxxx at local-stearsoft requires a username and password" I assume this is a windows matter rather than a stearsoft one? Have tried various usernames and passwords...and tried just leaving it blank. Nothing works. Wondering if this is connected with my sync from ipad problem?I have also added Stearsoft control and stearsoft administrator to my firewall. Still stuck.

OK. Yes, you've done exactly the steps you should have. The issue appears to be a network connection one, though I'm slightly puzzled that the firewall additions you've made haven't solved that. Perhaps it's a routing issue. Before that though...
The Authentication required when using a web-browser on your laptop is expected. The username and password defaults to 'admin' and 'admin', but you can change these in the stear-control program (installed to be off the start button in windows). See http://www.stearsoft.co.uk/passwordhelp.php for help on the various usernames and passwords.
Things to check with regard routing: Is your laptop and iPad on the same WiFi network? Do they have similar ip addresses (ie the first three numbers identical)?
Beyond this, to save repeating what you might have already read, have you found the troubleshooting section in the help in the iPad STEARsoft App? From the top screen in the STEARsoft App, touch Help, then jump to Troubleshooting. There's quite a bit there, but you've already progressed through a lot of the steps.
So in summary, the Authentication on your laptop isn't the problem (and hopefully you have a clue how to resolve that now), but the most likely problem is a network routing issue. The Troubleshooting section mentioned above may help, otherwise describing your physical network may help me help you.
Yours,
Marcus. |

Sorted the authentication problem (thank you). Knew that at the beginning, but think head got muddled dealing with the other problem.
Have checked the troubleshooter. Downloaded the Ping Lite. It's pinging just fine. Did tthe traceroute. Now apparent problems. 3ms
One thing I've noticed which confuses me is that when I find my ip address via cmd, it's different from the ip address that I get from Whatsmyipaddress.com. However, both ipad and laptop do this and both report the same IP depending on which method I use. Both ip addresses ping fine. Never any connection problems with general use. Have tried both IP addresses in the sycn setup.
Ping lite reports 4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0 packets lost.
Not sure what is needed to describe physical network. Will try basics first LOL
Have dlink connected to main pc (wired). Laptop is running wireless. Laptop Windows 7. Main PC on vista. Usually use laptop and ipad. Software on laptop. Is there anything else I need to tell you about the physical network?
Many thanks for your assistance with this. So determined to get it going, and feel sure it's something stupid I've missed..though I have tried so many different options, that I guess I'm getting paranoid that I've missed something very basic here.
Though I've tried different usernames in the sync setup in case that was a problem, I've settled on the teacher log in one. Is that correct? And could this be anything to do with it?

Dear Helen,
That's good progress and impressive determination.
The main thing I note from this is that the ip address you want is not the whatsmyipaddress.com one. You need to use the one obtained via cmd.
You describe your network usefully. You could actually test accessing STEARsoft from your wired PC. Just type your laptop name (adding :13031) into the address bar of a web-browser - or of course try your ip address (obtained from cmd on your laptop) followed by :13031.
The other thing you could safely test is switching off your firewall on your laptop. Because your home network goes through your DLink to get to the internet, the firewall on the DLink protects you from the rest of the world. Your laptop firewall will just add protection from other computers on your home network (which in your case is not a risk). I would just do this as a test though; once you've tested to see if it makes a difference, switch your firewall back on.
You might also have two firewalls which can cause unexpected results - sometimes people inadvertantly have the windows firewall (accessed from control panel) in addition to a firewall that comes with an anti-virus program. If this is the case, it's probably best to disable one and check that the other has knowledge of the STEARsoft programs.
So in summary, the main thing to revisit is which ip address to use, but there's a couple of other things to check too if that doesn't help. If still stuck, make sure you do the trace-route and ping things using the cmd-obtained ip address. The 'whatsmyipaddress.com' variant is the external address of your DLink so is not the correct test to use.
Let me know how you get on,
Yours,
Marcus |

PS Yes - the teacher log in will be the one to use when you get there on the synchronising. |
