Forum thread: Sync issue
Brendan Jones 01 November 2010 12:50 |
Hi Marcus, Since updating my iPhone to OS4.1, I keep getting an error message saying I need to purchase a license. If I click the activate license button in the admin section, the sync works, but the error reappears the next time I try to sync. Any tips? |
Marcus Butler (STEARsoft) 01 November 2010 21:39 |
Dear Brendan,
I'm confident the OS4.1 change is a coincidence. I'd find it hard to see how that might affect this. The reason it is saying this is usually for the following: STEARsoft licenses license the windows-web part of STEARsoft. A license is for a particular number of teacher accounts (plus the grace 200 trial sessions). As soon as an installation has more than the licensed number of teacher accounts, ALL teacher accounts become unlicensed. This means that if extra accounts have collectively gone over the 200 trial session limit, your otherwise licensed account will stop working. It sounds odd that the activate license button temporarily allows a sync, unless you're syncing from your iPhone to a new, blank teacher account. If you have extra accounts beyond your license, you'll need to either delete the accounts, remove enough attendance sessions to come under the 200 trial limit, or extend your license. At the bottom of the main administrator page, you can see a breakdown of how each teacher account contributes to the 200 trial limit, and which accounts are recorded as licensed. Remember, even if an account is ticked as licensed, it will behave as unlicensed if the installation as a whole exceeds the license limit. The overall status is indicated at the top of the main Administrator section.
If this is not the reason for the messages you're seeing, please do post again with greater detail. An exact description of any error message and where it appears (presumably on your iPhone) and at what point would be helpful.
Yours,
Marcus. |

Marcus, Got the same error message on the iPhone again. I can send you a screen shot of both iPhone and PC error messages. Where can I send them? If you email your email address to you, I'l send them on. As far as I can see, I have 1 teacher account, with 126 attendance sessions marked. On the STEARsoft website, all my Palm accounts are still there. I don't use the Palm anymore. I clicked the Activate License link again tonight and the PC installation said I have a license until 9th November 2011, and allowed me to sync again. Sorry for the ramble, Brendan |

Dear Brendan,
The screen shots may be helpful to try and identify your problem.
I've sent you an email that you can reply to with these.
Thank you for your patience.
Yours,
Marcus. |

Dear Brendan,
Thank you for the screen shots. So is it all now working?
Suspecting the problem might come back... Are you using more than one computer to run STEARsoft? For example using an external hard-disk or pen-drive that you put into different computers? Or have you changed your computer physically (put new hardware in it, like a new network card). Or do you use a USB WiFi card that is sometimes in and sometimes out? Or do you have an internal network that you sometimes switch off? If so, let me know what, as this could be an influencing factor that might explain the problem and hence suggest a solution.
Yours,
Marcus. |

Hi Marcus-
We "spoke" a few times last year, and I'm enjoying using STEARsoft on my iPad. Now that i am finally attempting to sync iPad and iPhone with a Windows account, I am fully overwhelmed by the amount of instructions to read and videos to watch. I seem to have successfully set up my WIndows account, but the snc process hits a snag when I am asked for a server ID. Where would I find that? Then my username and password are not recognized...HELP!
Thanks- Bob Caplan |

Dear Bob,
Thank you for your post. Yes I do recall a previous conversation... And yes, the Windows version and setting up Synchronisation isn't quite as easy as it might be...
One thing that may help is to be aware that the Windows system is really set up for whole school usage... So using the 'Administrator' bit of the Windows software you pretend to be the school office and create a 'teacher' account which is then for you to use. When you're pretending to be the school office, the username and password you set up for yourself (you choose them/make them up) are the ones you will need to 'synchronise'. Note that these are case sensitive, even the username. If your username is BOb, then you must enter BOb (capital capital small) for example.
To narrow down the tutorials to watch, the bit above is explained in the first minute of this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISgRXa8kf9c
You don't need to enter anything extra in the Windows bit. In fact you should delete and clear any Synchronisation ID you might have put in - this is automatically completed for you when your iPad is matched, and having something different put in here will make things a little more awkward.
So having created your 'teacher account' (and not set any extra ID information), go to your iPad. Make sure it's on the same network and go to the Synchronise settings screen. You should be able to 'auto-discover' the Windows server (provided you're on the same network). Click on the server to select it. Enter your username and password (the ones you made up for yourself). And try that. This process is described in this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8g1k3hs8OwQ Except towards the end change the 'Sync type' to 'iPhone to Server' instead.
I hope that might get you there, but obviously post back if any stage isn't doing as you expect.
Good luck!
Best wishes,
Marcus. |

HI I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO SYNC THE REGISTER FROM IPHONE TO COMPUTER, PLEASE HELP!!!! |
Marcus Butler (STEARsoft) 24 September 2013 22:44 |
Dear Simran,
Thank you for your post.
Step 1) Is to download (from this website) and install STEARsoft for Windows. Step 2) is to register and activate a trial license for that Windows installation. Step 3) is to make sure both Windows computer and your iPhone are connected to the same wifi network, and to go to 'Synchronisation Setup' in the iPhone App. Then go to 'Add server' where your Windows computer should be discovered.
Once you've got that far report back and I'll help with the next bit. If Step 3 doesn't discover your computer that would indicate a network problem which you may need separate help for; either configuring your firewall to stop blocking STEARsoft, ensuring signal strength of your wifi connection is strong enough to be reliable or that any router isn't blocking network traffic.
See how far you can get, then let me know at which point, more specifically you get stuck.
Yours,
Marcus |
